Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education Invited to Attend the 68th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women

The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), established in 1946 and affiliated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, brings together representatives of member states as well as representatives from international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders. Each year the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) convenes at United Nations Headquarters to jointly deliberate and formulate policies and action plans to advance gender equality and women's rights.

Established in 1946 and affiliated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) convenes representatives from member states, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and stakeholders annually at the United Nations Headquarters. The primary objective is to collectively deliberate and devise policies and action plans to advance gender equality and women's rights.

On March 11, 2024, the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) opened at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The thematic focus of this session was “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing.” The session drew representatives from around the world to engage in cooperation and exchange on topics of shared interest.

Commencing on March 11, 2024, the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women commenced at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The thematic focus of this session centered on "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls through poverty eradication, institutional strengthening, and financing." Delegates from across the globe congregated to exchange insights and foster collaboration on matters of mutual concern.

At present, the world faces a critical moment for achieving gender equality. Data from 48 developing countries show that to attain key global goals, including the eradication of poverty and hunger, an additional investment of US$360 billion per year is needed to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment. Accelerating progress toward gender equality requires increased investment. At the 68th session of CSW, governments, civil society organizations, experts, and activists from around the world jointly agreed on actions and investments to end women's poverty and advance gender equality.

The present global juncture underscores a critical imperative for realizing gender parity. Data from 48 developing nations reveal a pressing need for an additional annual investment of $360 billion to attain gender equality and women's empowerment, inclusive of poverty and hunger alleviation. Expedited investment is essential to expedite progress towards gender equality. At the 68th CSW session, representatives from governments, civil society organizations, experts, and activists convened to deliberate on strategies and investment initiatives to alleviate poverty among women and advance gender equality.

As an organization with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education has long been committed to promoting gender equality and strengthening women's rights. This year, a highly professional delegation comprising Director-General Zhao Yuanhong, Secretary-General Ou Jing, Deputy Director-General Xing Haiyan, and Far East YDC Chairman Zhang Xiangguo, among others, attended the session and engaged in in-depth discussions with representatives from around the world on topics such as how to strengthen women's status, improve educational opportunities, and promote gender equality.

The Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education, vested with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, has steadfastly championed the cause of gender equality and women's rights. In attendance at this year's session was a distinguished delegation, led by Zhao Yuanhong, Director-General, Ou Jing, Secretary-General, Xing Haiyan, Deputy Director-General, and Zhang Xiangguo, Chairman of the Far East YDC. They actively engaged in substantive discussions with representatives from diverse backgrounds on themes encompassing the enhancement of women's status, augmenting educational opportunities, and fostering gender parity.

During the session, representatives of the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education actively participated in the various discussions and shared the region's successful experiences and challenges in advancing women's development and education. They emphasized the importance of education for women's empowerment and for promoting social development, and called on the international community to step up investment in educational resources, especially education targeting women and girls.

Throughout the session, representatives from the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education proactively contributed to dialogues, sharing the organization's successful endeavors and confronting challenges in advancing women's development and education within the region. Emphasis was placed on the pivotal role of education in empowering women and propelling societal advancement, while a resounding call was made upon the international community to bolster investment in educational resources, particularly targeting women and girls.


In addition, on March 15 the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education will host a sub-forum titled “Empowering Women and Reducing Poverty through Digital Technologies,” inviting young people from around the world to take part. The hope is to use digital technologies in the future to empower women's development, further advancing the gender equality goal within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and contributing to building a more equitable and inclusive world. Attending this session is an important step in the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education's commitment to promoting women's development and education, and it also demonstrates the organization's influence and standing on the international stage.

Furthermore, the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education will host a sub-forum titled "Empowering Women and Reducing Poverty through Digital Technologies" on March 15, extending invitations to youth worldwide. The objective is to harness digital technologies in advancing women's development, thereby catalyzing progress towards gender equality goals enshrined within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This initiative underscores the organization's commitment to fostering a more equitable and inclusive global landscape. Participation in this session epitomizes a pivotal stride undertaken by the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education in advancing women's development and education, emblematic of its influence and stature on the international stage.
