Since its founding in Los Angeles in 1990, the Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education (P.R.I.D.E.) has left its mark on both shores of the Pacific — from disaster relief and cultural symposia, to the stage of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, to the long journey of the Huggy Plan. The timeline below runs from the most recent events back to the beginning.

  1. Prince Chirayu Chirakom Jitiyana of the Thai Royal Family, honorary chair of the Belt and Road International Cooperation Organization, visited the P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific headquarters with his delegation. The two sides held in-depth talks on cooperation in education, culture, environmental protection and public welfare, agreeing that collaboration would help meet the region’s challenges — a new breakthrough in their partnership.

  2. The 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) convened at UN Headquarters in New York under the theme of accelerating gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls by eradicating poverty and strengthening institutions and financing. As an organization in ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, P.R.I.D.E. sent a delegation and, on 15 March, hosted a side event on empowering women and alleviating poverty through digital technology.

  3. The "2024 · To the World: South Africa" study program organized by P.R.I.D.E. opened at its Shanghai office before continuing in South Africa. Combining the Huggy Plan with the Sustainable Development Goals, the program cultivated students’ global vision and research skills through cultural immersion.

  4. P.R.I.D.E. held the opening ceremony of the "2024 · Journey West" study program in Shanghai and Gansu. Guided by the SDGs and combined with the Huggy Plan, the journey explored the history of the Silk Road, promoted East–West cultural exchange and identified young scholars with leadership potential.

  5. P.R.I.D.E. and the Department of Sociology of Shanghai Normal University co-hosted the academic forum "People · Digital · City: The Digital-Intelligent Transformation of Modern Urban Society" at the Xuhui campus, exploring the impact of digital transformation on urban society through a keynote programme, parallel forums and a youth forum.

  6. The 6th International Coffee Showcase, organized by P.R.I.D.E. and hosted by the Yangtze River Delta Coffee Industry Association, was held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) during the China International Import Expo, featuring a "Best Coffee of the World" competition to advance international exchange and cooperation in coffee culture.

  7. P.R.I.D.E. and the Japan International Calligraphy and Painting Cultural Exchange Association jointly held a cultural forum at the Kyoto International Community House, bringing together more than 50 delegates and underscoring the importance of China–Japan cultural exchange.

  8. The academic forum "People · Digital · City: Urban Life in the Age of Digital Intelligence" organized by P.R.I.D.E. was held at the United Nations University in Tokyo, focusing on how digital-intelligence technology shapes urban life and sustainable development, with topics ranging from cross-border e-commerce and gender budgeting to community elder-care and sustainable eco-communities.

  9. P.R.I.D.E. held the "Journey West" International Youth Talent Program study tour in Shanghai and Gansu, offering both practical and academic tracks and giving outstanding participants the chance to take part in the UN Youth Elite Forum, fostering the all-round development of young people.

  10. At the 67th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, P.R.I.D.E. hosted a side event on "Girls and Technology: Change in Both Directions," focusing on how digital technology can empower gender equality and inviting young leaders and women experts from around the world to share their experience.

  11. P.R.I.D.E. and the Institute of Sociology of Shanghai Normal University co-hosted the forum "People · Digital · City" in Shanghai’s Hongqiao business district, where scholars exchanged views across disciplines on smart cities, smart elder-care, age-friendly technology and urban governance — exploring how digital intelligence can make cities more humane and technology warmer.

  12. For the 30th consecutive year, P.R.I.D.E. was invited to send a delegation to the 66th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, and once again hosted the side event "Building Bridges: Youth and Junior Youth Working for Peace and Justice," with more than 40 young people from around the world taking part and speaking.

  13. On the occasion of the 72nd National Day of China, leaders of the P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office visited several social welfare homes and charities in Shanghai, donating relief supplies worth a total of RMB 5 million.

  14. A P.R.I.D.E. awards ceremony was held in Shenyang. The Huggy Plan joined Xiehe Biological Group to launch a relief program for children with leukemia in China, bringing hope of recovery to children from impoverished families, and received donated medical supplies worth RMB 5 million.

  15. The Huggy Plan committee, together with members of the Xuhui Returned-Overseas-Chinese Federation and the Kangjian Overseas-Chinese Station, took part in a charity bazaar at the Joshoen Children’s Home of Nishi Hongan-ji in Osaka, Japan, spreading the initiative’s message and rallying support for the proposed International Orphan Care Day.

  16. Representatives of the P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office traveled to Japan to co-host the "Night of Chinese Culture · Autumn of the Arts" cultural exchange with the Japan Federation of Chinese Writers and Artists, with the Chinese Consul-General in Osaka attending by invitation.

  17. P.R.I.D.E. headquarters led members of the Xuhui Returned-Overseas-Chinese Federation to the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63), where the Huggy Plan committee was again invited to attend at UN Headquarters in New York.

  18. Representatives of the P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office traveled to Osaka, Japan, to assist and take part in the autumn charity bazaar of the well-known welfare organization Hakuaisha.

  19. At the invitation of Philippine Senate President Aquilino Pimentel, P.R.I.D.E. representatives traveled to the Philippines to discuss assistance for orphaned children.

  20. P.R.I.D.E. headquarters attended the 62nd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), where the Huggy Plan committee was invited to participate at UN Headquarters in New York.

  21. The Huggy Plan held its "Pass On the Love" mass children’s chorus simultaneously at the Shanghai Tower landmark and seven other famous venues across the city.

  22. The Huggy Plan’s China campaign, together with the Shanghai Masters’ Art Research Association, delivered nearly RMB 200,000 of study and living supplies to a special-education school in Moyu County, Hotan, Xinjiang.

  23. The Huggy Plan’s Shangri-La campaign delivered ample daily necessities to more than 300 orphaned and impoverished children in the area.

  24. Volunteers of the Huggy Plan, together with the Life Rainbow Fund of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, traveled to Xishuangbanna to bring care and assistance to scattered orphans and de-facto unaccompanied children in Jinghong.

  25. The Huggy Plan joined the renowned Japanese welfare organization Hakuaisha for its annual charity bazaar.

  26. The Huggy Plan’s China campaign traveled to Yushu and Taxiu in Qinghai, delivering supplies to about 320 orphaned and impoverished children in local monasteries.

  27. The P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office was invited to the 60th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, where it set out detailed proposals for assisting orphans worldwide — from recruiting educators, doctors, counselors and volunteers, to improving orphan records, safeguarding the right to education, advancing adoption and ensuring children’s right to a family and to love.

  28. At the Hongqiao Art Space in Shanghai, the Huggy Plan’s global signature campaign drew the support of many Chinese and Japanese artists, each leaving words of care in the hope of helping more homeless children feel love and embrace from around the world.

  29. The 2015 China–Japan International Ink Painting Exhibition opened at the Shanghai Academy of Painting and Calligraphy, where the P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office once again took part and promoted the Huggy Plan.

  30. The P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office and the Shanghai Masters’ Art Research Association held an exhibition of calligraphy and painting at the Yunjian Art Museum in the Shanghai World Financial Center, calling on people from all walks of life to sign in support of the Huggy Plan and the proposal to establish an International Orphan Care Day.

  31. The P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office held a charity bazaar in Shanghai, China.

  32. The P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office took part in the China–Japan International Ink Painting Exhibition in Japan, promoting the Huggy Plan.

  33. The P.R.I.D.E. Asia-Pacific office launched the Huggy Plan at a press conference held at the Shanghai Library.

  34. To advance the establishment of an International Orphan Care Day, P.R.I.D.E. joined with partner organizations to launch a worldwide series of charity activities, seeking the attention and support of people everywhere — so that lives may be renewed and love may shine brighter.

  35. P.R.I.D.E. prepared to establish its Asia-Pacific headquarters in China, laying the groundwork for international operations and humanitarian work across Asia and ASEAN.

  36. Centered on the elevation of ethics and globalization, P.R.I.D.E. connected its work with online discussion to build lasting, interactive consensus.

  37. P.R.I.D.E. held a series of cross-cultural ethics seminars on the theme of "Wealth, Success and Love," in dialogue with the United Nations, NGOs, the World Bank and CSW online in 2010.

  38. P.R.I.D.E. took part in the 6th Shanghai "For the Children" International Forum and its declaration on the protection of children’s rights and child participation.

  39. P.R.I.D.E. attended the International Symposium on Science, Faith and Urban Culture at Shanghai Normal University.

  40. P.R.I.D.E. successfully held the 3rd International Symposium on Religion, Ethics and Culture in Beijing.

  41. The Ocean University of China hosted the 5th P.R.I.D.E. traditional-culture delegation to China.

  42. P.R.I.D.E. signed a cooperation agreement with the School of Philosophy and Social Sciences of Beijing Normal University to collaborate on the academic development of global ethics.

  43. P.R.I.D.E. held the 2nd International Symposium on Religion, Ethics and Culture in Los Angeles, where former UN Under-Secretary-General Chen Jian and a Prince of Jordan delivered addresses.

  44. P.R.I.D.E. was granted Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council, which it holds to this day.

  45. P.R.I.D.E. held the 1st International Symposium on Religion, Ethics and Culture in Beijing. At a time when religion remained a highly sensitive topic in China, P.R.I.D.E. co-hosted the symposium with the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and published its proceedings.

  46. P.R.I.D.E. brought a 62-member delegation — drawn from countries across Africa, Europe and the Americas — to the World Conference on Women in Beijing.

  47. P.R.I.D.E. co-hosted a China–U.S. children’s concert in Beijing for International Children’s Day, together with the China Children’s Center and the Chinese Musicians’ Association.

  48. P.R.I.D.E. held an international finance and accounting workshop in Los Angeles for China’s national transport investment corporation.

  49. P.R.I.D.E. helped China’s Ministry of Agriculture organize a kiwifruit study and training delegation to Los Angeles.

  50. P.R.I.D.E. provided flood-relief assistance to China and received a certificate of appreciation from the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles.

  51. The Pacific Rim Institute for Development and Education was founded in Los Angeles.
